COMMON GROUND is a choreographic game of chess. Ingrained rules are upturned by unexpected moves — intricate gambits, sacrifices, and reactive attacks. Together with her team, Dutch choreographer and former Chunky Move Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk looked at the duet form as both a utopian ideal and a display of the inherent complexity that partnerships bring.

Restaged and performed by two strong Skånes Dansteater dancers, this breathtaking duet has become a poetic study on similarity, equality, defining territory, and shifting grounds, testing the tension between the support we need and the restrictions of codependency.

COMMON GROUND premieres 8 Feb 2024. The show is available for international touring.

Wearing skin-tight playsuits, Aloun Marchal and Henrique Furtado weigh each other up, stare at each other, stand firm in the middle of the stage, and let out a cry from deep inside: the challenge is laid down. Face to face, close to each other, conniving and provoking at the same time, they are getting ready. They explore a wide range of sounds and movements with clashing styles, from sports fighting to teasing childish games, from rumbling noises to lullabies, from straightforward breathing to bestial yelling.

Progressive mechanisms drive the performers even further into their exercise, moving disjointedly and opening their throats more and more. The pas de deux glides from controlled violence to sensuality, which are both disturbingly based on listening mimicry and exchange of movements. Progressively and cruelly, get tangled, mixed up, and rival each other. Henrique Furtado and Aloun Marchal are ready, at last...

The performers and choreographers Aloun Marchal (FR) and Henrique Furtado (PT) are presenting a hyperventilating performance, bringing together a wide range of manhood practices – from throat songs to couple dances and modern wrestling.

Performance dates: 11-13 Jan 2024 at Teatro São Luiz, Lisbon (PT)

In RITE OF SPRING, the dance comes dangerously close and the grand notes of composer Stravinsky manifest in a small but explosive ensemble, in a form of rebellious playfulness and total lack of sacrifice. This great classic, reformulated by Norrdans’ Artistic Director Martin Forsberg, is a macrocosm in a small space, where scales, volume, and vibrations take center stage. The beauty finds its place next to the sublime and the captivating next to the distorted.

After the re-premiere on 12 Jan 2024 in Härnösand (SE), RITE OF SPRING finds its way through venues in the north of Sweden. In addition to this, the production will make an extensive tour in the autumn of 2024, as a co-production with Riksteatern (SE). The piece is available for international touring. RITE OF SPRING was part of the program at The Swedish Biennial for Performing Arts 2023.

Susanna Leinonen Company will perform NASTY at Tanssin Talo in Helsinki (FI) on 18-20 Jan 2024.

NASTY is a strikingly topical work that centers on the expectations, limitations, and attacks targeted at our bodies. The piece presents an unvarnished vision of our world, where evil hides in the structures of society but also in ourselves: we pass along the injustice and cruelty we have experienced.

Susanna Leinonen Company’s works are known for their extremely skillful and demanding movement. This time choreographer Leinonen and her ensemble have chosen to examine our bodily limits, as well as how constantly being looked at and under conflicting demands and expectations shape the female body and experience. In the center of the work are dancers and their bodies as tools of artistic work. In Nasty, the highly trained physique becomes a machine that stretches, bends, and creaks to fulfill its full potential. But the question remains: who gets to define that potential? For more info and tickets go here.

….utterly brilliant and undoubtedly one of the finest contributions to the debate on women’s right to self-determination.” Demokraatti (FI)
