House of Choice - provides more energy than it gets

On June 1, 2021, the first guests checked into the Comfort Hotel Solna next to Friends Arena in Arenastaden, north of Stockholm. The hotel is the first in Scandinavia to generate more energy than it consumes

The hotel is also the largest business in the building, which also features 88 longstay apartments and Nordic Choice Hotel's Swedish headquarters. In this newsletter we will have a closer look at the hotel, which is really environmentally friendly and where nothing has been left to chance. If you want to see all the details, click on the pictures and they will open in a larger format.

Enjoy!

Enough energy to power a Tesla 57 laps around the world

A standard hotel consumes 80 kWh/sqm per year. House of Choice uses 80% less energy and measures in at 15 kWh/sqm per year. In order to achieve this, every detail has been carefully thought through, even down to the size and location of the windows. On the roof and on the façade, there are over 2,500 sqm of solar cells, which makes the building the world's most solar-powered hotel.

Energy saved lasts all year round

The building is supplied with cooling and heat from heat pumps that efficiently charge and draw energy from borehole bearings. A giant battery in the basement saves heat during the summer and cold in winter. The saved energy is used in the opposite season with cold in summer and heat in winter.

Heat generated from the kitchen is used to heat the rooms. And the lifts are charged as they descend so that they do not draw electricity when ascending.

Solar cells are part of the architecture

An aesthetic challenge was combining the façade with solar cells. The solution was using glass that has been treated in three separate ways – one grooved and two with different patterns of etched coating. Each design is perceived differently depending on the lighting conditions but without affecting the efficiency of the solar cells.

24/7 service

At the entrance is a combined reception and bar. Here you can get personal service and buy coffe, drinks and light meals at any time.

Large flexible areas for meetings and work

In the lower three floors of the house you have access to open lounge areas with varied work and meeting places. As well as a number of bookable meeting rooms in different sizes. Book for just an hour or several days.

Space for the whole family

The hotel's 336 rooms range in size from 18 to 75 sqm. The larger rooms can accommodate a bigger party or the whole family. Here, the stripped raw concrete roofs return, which saves material and gives the rooms character.

Longstay is like being at home

Comfort Hotel Solna has 88 Longstay units for extended hotel stays, ranging from small 1 room to larger 3 room apartments. They are all well planned with fully equipped kitchenettes, and sofa beds for friends and sleepovers. Guests can stay for a longer period in their own apartment with access to the hotel’s ”barception” – a combined bar and reception desk – with breakfast and lounge areas as well as meeting rooms and nearby gym and laundry room, available 24/7.

Art is, as always, a consistent concept

Nordic Choice's concept of allowing selected Scandinavian contemporary art to become part of the interior is also found here at the Comfort Hotel Solna. Above is a work from the series Rust, by Dawid. Pictured is a photo of Through the Roof Hatch by Åke Hedström in the stairwell. The photo is taken through the sunroof of a car.

Raw concrete and recycled materials

An important part of the architecture is the raw concrete from the construction. In addition to material reduction, it creates a specific expression. A consistent focus has been to work with nature and recycled materials in the interior design and surfaces. Stone, solid wood and 100% wool in the carpets with green profiles, and textiles and draperies in recycled material.

Reuse at Nordic Choice Hotel's Swedish headquarters

On the floor above the hotel's barception is Nordic Choice Hotel's Swedish headquarters with its main office for digital development, new establishments, and real estate. Here, a large part of the interior has been recycled from the previous head office. Everything from worktables, writing desks and conference chairs to porcelain has been recycled. The interior has been complemented with newly designed combined lockers and break room furniture.
