Immigration and Participation - can it be done? 
- Current research gives a hint -
 
In Sweden more than 25% of all children have at least one parent born in another country and in the last years we have received a large amount of refugees to Sweden. These facts have challenged the welfare systems in Sweden both concerning how services can adapt to the changes in demography and how we can support people coming from other countries to adapt to the Swedish context. 

That's one research topic area in which we recently have focused more; children with another ethnical background than Swedish and their participation. Can a large immigration lead to a satisfying participation? Current research gives us a hint.

Immigration and Participation: Can it be done in School?
 
During 2015 Sweden received a great number of refugee children. This placed a significant burden on responsible authorities to grant these children their rights. One of the most significant rights is the right to schooling. Children who arrive in Sweden as immigrants or as asylum seekers should be placed in school within one month from arrival. It is therefore important to know how children from different cultures and with different mother tongues perceive school and their own participation in education, states PhD-student Anna Niia.

Researchers Maria Harder and Marie Golsäter perform a study on health visits with children of foreign origin in the Swedish Child health and School health care. One conclusion is that nurses need to be cultural competent to provide equal care to all children.

Can it be done in Pre-school and in Special Support?
 
Children’s engagement in preschool activities is an important factor for their well-being and learning. However, preschool staff report that children with other ethnical background than Swedish are less engaged in preschool activities. They also rate children with other ethnicity to exhibit more behaviour problems such as hyperactivity or conduct problems. Concurrently, in our longitudinal studies we have seen that these children obtain less special support for functioning, states reseacher Lena Almqvist.

Apply for Interventions in Childhood - a master's program
 
A walk-and-talk with the Master's Program.
The master's program Interventions in Childhood is an interdisciplinary program on how to provide effective interventions for children in need of support for their development, learning and functioning in everyday life (here performing a walk-and-talk).
The program is a part of CHILD's international focus.  

- Soon the 26 master students in the program have finished their first year, says head of the program Madeleine Sjöman
- This spring consisted of two courses, the One Year Master Thesis and the Developmental Sciences. The students are doing systematic reviews within disability research, special education, health and sciences, or social work. We are looking forward to their results.
 
 
New PhD
 
In January, Christina Petersson successfully defended her doctoral thesis "Using health-related quality of life instruments for children with long-term conditions: On the basis of a national quality registry system".

The overall aim of the thesis was to explore and describe the use of instruments about health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in outpatient care for children with long-term conditions on the basis of a national quality registry system.
