SKÅNES DANSTEATER
– A poetic journey in the footsteps of Tibetan poet and environmental activist
|

|
Springing from the creative minds of choreographer duo Danae & Dionysios, based in Athens, Greece, comes a contemporary dance piece interlacing creatures and concepts of our inner and outer worlds. Unraveling itself within a dreamlike space inspired by Tibetan poet and environmental activist Kawa Niangji, IN WIND OR DUST is a poetic journey in and out of the vibrant images of his poetry. The urgency and need for human connection within a reality that keeps collapsing, the nostalgia of a past world, and the instinctive strive for hopefulness are just some of the main axes of this young poet's craft.
IN WIND OR DUST premieres 29 Feb 2024 at Skånes Dansteater, Malmö (SE). The show is touring in the south of Sweden.

In Liz Kinoshita's work, it is impossible to avoid the enticing pulse and rhythm that both occupy and surround the room. MIDNIGHT OIL is an offering to anyone who may feel like they are running on fumes, keeping up with the pace of ambitions for oneself or one's loved ones.
It is a moment to reflect on the drive that comes at night, the questions, the confrontations, on how this world was formed when burning one's last reserves of fuel... And it is a celebration of resiliency, of being able to hold one another through the dark times, of gratitude for playfully pushing each other past boundaries that hurt no one, of cultivating justified fury, with grace.
MIDNIGHT OILworld premieres on 29 Feb 2024 at Härnösand Theater, followed by a tour 29 Feb-17 April 2024 in the North of Sweden and to Nacka just outside Stockholm (SE).

CHEST opens at Dansens Hus in Stockholm (SE) on 8 May 2024, with additional performances 10-11 May 2024. CHEST is a choreography at the intersection of ecology, animals, and masculinity. It intertwines seemingly contradictory concepts such as hard and soft, limp and stiff, or hairy and bald in sweaty attempts to be natural to one another. With CHEST, Stina Nyberg continues to explore new musical horizons, this time in collaboration with composer Kaki King, based in New York, USA. CHEST is the third part of Nyberg's exploration of humanity's assholery, previously developed in SWEET (MDT 2022) and THE DAWN CHORUS (Norrdans 2022). Producers are Terry Johnson (Johnson & Bergsmark), Magnus Nordberg (Nordberg Movement). Supported by the Swedish Arts Council and the Swedish Arts Grants Committee.
CHEST is part of STHLM DANCE - an international contemporary dance festival in the Stockholm region 2-12 May 2024.

The starting point for the creation of the work MONGREL was ”the Janteloven”, where the fictitious code of behavior is presented as part of the Scandinavian identity. A behavior that choreographer and Danish Dance Theatre's new artistic director Marina Mascarell recognizes from her own Spanish culture.
MONGREL shows a closed community formed by individuals who, in their loneliness, dream of being liberated from the invisible border and suffocating homogeneity. An explosive release of repressed emotions fighting against an oppressive culture and mediocrity.
The music is an original composition by Spanish composer and cello player Yamila Ríos. The strings of the cello, along with a prominent percussion and electronic sound, are the protagonists of this composition. MONGREL was nominated by the Barcelona Critics' Awards 2016 for Best International Performance, Best Choreography and Best Set Design. With support from Grete og Sigurd Pedersens Fond, William Demant Fond. Tour dates: 21 feb 2024 Vordingborg Teater (DK), 23 Feb 2024 Rønne Theater, Bornholm (DK), 11 March 2024 Aalborg Teater (DK), 13 March 2024 Det Musiske Hus, Frederikshavn (DK), 17 March 2024 Stadttheater Flensburg (DK).

Choreographer Helena Franzén and filmmaker Håkan Jelk have created an exhibition consisting of a spatial installation. BREAKING POINT is a reflection and a reminder of our fragile existence. The exhibition invites you to deepen and reflect on our relationship with nature.
On recurring occasions, Helena Franzén will dance in the exhibition. In her solo- improvisation, she brings things to life in the exhibition. The dance is performed on two occasions on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the whole period of the exhibition.

In early March, Gunilla Heilborn premieres her new piece DANTE at Dansens Hus in Stockholm. In this work, we meet three lost souls in an indecisive comedy of constant wandering and unreliable guides. Like all comedies, DANTE starts badly but ends well. We will hear music and songs composed by Kim Hiorthøy, a long-time collaborator of Heilborn. On stage, we will see Ludvig Daae and Kristiina Viiala, both of whom have been performing in several of Heilborn's pieces, as well as a new collaborator; Ida Wigdel.
Past and present meet in a highly speculative reading of Dante's eternal questions in a brand new work for three lost souls. Wandering in a constant fog of uncertainty, no answers are revealed, but plenty of questions that alternate between classic Heilborn humour and seriousness.

AND SO WE'RE GONE is performing at Atalante in Göteborg (SE) on 1-2 Mar 2024. Ingenious math, existential march, and nostalgic intensities are set in motion in choreographer Björn Säfsten's work. The work emerges out of intricate spatial patterns of walking where different equations are layered upon each other, forming a detailed and fascinating web of movements. Memories occur between these mathematical and patterned states – or are they fantasies? Animated and dreamlike situations from a life lived and a life lost?
Björn Säfsten continues to challenge the abstract and the concrete at the heart of the movement in a work that wants to explore our sensible experience of time.
The work premiered at Dansens Hus in October 2023 and is made possible with support from the Swedish Arts Council, the City of Stockholm, and the Swedish Arts Grants Committee. For full credits list and additional information, go here.

RADIO III / ᎦᏬᏂᏍᎩ ᏦᎢ is an indigenous futuristic concert, a beautiful and uncomfortable dance performance, and a perverse triangle of shifting power that seeks to be unfaithful to both minimalism and postmodern dance's so-called "neutrality." This choreography haunts the recognizable toolbox of abstraction, form, repetition, and pattern by striving to make visible that which has been kept invisible and illegible in colonial systems of aesthetics. Read more about the artists Zoë Poluch, Hanako Hoshimi-Caines, and Elisa Harkins here.

THE SOUL CATCHER is a seductive and deeply disturbing performance about psychological and physical abuse, manipulation, and power - in a powerful mix of performance, dance, spoken word, and electronic music.
Tourdates: 1-4 May 2024, San Francisco International Arts Festival, San Francisco, US. "As an audience, it's like a ride in a roller coaster. Huge experience and mood fluctuations. From joy to discomfort. From comedy to seduction. From chaos to laughter. From safety to confusion. All in a total jumble that can change over time, down to a few minutes, or just seconds! Like the psychopath's actions and appearances, this performance is extremely unpredictable and strikes at the same time a powerful contemporary beat to enlighten and prevent the encounter with a psychopath. Watch out!” - XQ28 (DK) THE SOUL CATCHER is produced by Kassandra Production in a co-production with theatre Bora Bora. Supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, The City of Aarhus, Knud Højgaards Fond,William Demant Fonden and DMF .
