Well-preserved empire style

The building is constructed in a classic style according to drawings by Johan Fredric Fehmer. It originally had a floor with a drivable passage in the middle. The second floor was built in 1842 with plans by architect Fredrik Blom. The two single-storey wings were added in 1876 designed by Carl Theodor Glosemeyer.

The typical façade from the 1840s is well preserved making the building a good example of the empire style of architecture. It is also known as the Napoleonic style, which is a continuation of the strict neoclassicism that prevailed during the time of French king Louis XVI.

Typical color scheme

During the 1970s, a competition was initiated for students in Norrköping’s primary schools. The assignment was to create a new color scheme for the Customs House. The judges were inspired by Monica Jansson’s winning proposal and Tullhuset’s façades were painted in a strong reddish-brown color.

With the renovation, the building again got a period-typical color scheme inspired by contemporary Rosendal Palace on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm, and the Swedish Academy of Agriculture at Stockholm University. Both buildings were designed by Fredrik Blom, one of the foremost Swedish architects of that time.

Tullhuset is one of the three properties nominated for the façade of 2021 in the renovation category.

A golden extension

To the west, the building has been extended with an eye-catching pavilion serving drinks and light refreshments. The extension is the hub around the boules court and the large patio with sun from early morning to late evening and views of Strömmen and Strömholmen.

Nordic kitchen scents

The old customs house was acquired by Spinnhuset Fastighets AB in April 2014 with plans to develop the property with new businesses. The heart of the new Customs House was the Restaurant on the ground floor with a strong focus on local ingredients and Nordic cuisine.

The building is preserved for all time

A building monument declaration from 1978 declared that the customs house must be preserved for all time, as it is an important part of Sweden’s common cultural heritage. The property is also marked “q,” which is the strongest protective designation for a property, so neither facades nor original details may be changed. During the renovation, great care was taken to hide all installations on floors and walls.

Among the building’s original details are the Y-pillars in the restaurant and the wooden roof in the wine room which is the restaurant’s private dining room.

Party with own chef and bartender

Upstairs is the banquet hall Etage. Here, private individuals and companies can rent rooms for parties and various events with their own bartender and chef as well as their own choice of music.

Gold glimmering waste storage

As a shiny satellite to the golden bar – Guldbaren, architect firm Millimeter Arkitekter has designed a gold-colored house for waste and recycling.
